The Client:
Sharon was a teacher with many years of experience working with special needs children. She wanted to write a book to help launch her second career as a motivational speaker for school districts, teachers’ groups, PTA’s, etc.
The Project:
As a teacher, Sharon was an experienced writer, but she had never written a book before. She was looking for a coach to help her through the writing process. We worked together to identify her target market, discussed the format for her book, and then set up a schedule for her to write each chapter in a timely fashion.
Sharon completed her first draft in a few months, and I then edited her book. We then discussed various options for publishing and marketing her project. Sharon decided to self-publish, so that she would have the greatest control over the style and content of the book, as well as royalties and marketing.
The Results:
Within one year, Sharon completed her book and published it on Amazon as both an e-book and a paper book. She began marketing her book, and herself, to school districts and university education departments. With the help of her graphic artist and website designer she created a variety of materials to market herself, including a website, a speaker packet, postcards and bookmarks.
Sharon got excellent feedback on her book. While it took several months to begin to get speaking engagements, she is now regularly asked to speak at a variety of education events. While she sells some books online, most of her book sales are made during her speaking engagements. She has sold several hundred books in just one year.
